The industrial software machine
I’ve been thinking a lot over the last year or two about whether AI can, or will, leave the majority of software engineers redundant. The purists are in denial while the vibe coders are bullish and having a whale of a time pushing boundaries, but nobody can deny that AI has already changed the game in terms of general software engineering productivity. Or that there'll be more seismic impact to come.
I thought this tweet from Tom Blomfield put it well.
Tom is an entrepreneur turned VC at Y Combinator so of course he’s bullish on AI, but he's also technical, incredibly clever and astute. I think he's nailed it with this quote.
Like the artisan bakers in the food industry, there will always be independent software artisans doing things in the traditional way, but make no mistake – we're heading into a world where the majority will be fed from the industrial software machine.
