Subvert
I'm increasingly deterred by Spotify and music streaming in general. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love being able to browse most of the music on planet Earth – that's a modern miracle – but Spotify's descent into enshittification, its shafting of artists and most recently its move towards replacing artists with AI, is leaving a very sour taste. I could migrate to Apple Music or Tidal, sure, but that only moves the problem sideways.
I've always bought the albums I really like so (a) I have my own digital copy, and (b) I can better support the artist, but this is bizarrely difficult sometimes and you have to resort to 7digital or Qobuz to pay over-the-odds for commercial releases. I use Bandcamp when I can (most major label releases are not on there), and I'm increasingly trying to discover new artists on there although I find it discovery hard on Bandcamp. Signal to noise is not great.
All this is why I joined Subvert as a founding member last year. Members will (in a small part) "own and control the next Bandcamp" which is pretty exciting if you ask me. If you're a music fan, I highly recommend joining as a supporting member if you're able ($100). There's an active forum for members who are helping behind the scenes to shape what Subvert becomes. It feels like a moonshot, but the only way of getting up there is to try. Who's in?
