I launched an app! Now what?

After an extended winter hiatus, I resumed development of Teamlight in April and rushed to get it out of the door. I had loose ends to tie up, blank slates to add, billing capability to ship. To top it all off I needed a fun promo video and a Product Hunt launch.

It worked! It was out there, finally!

Now what?

There was so much I could do, lots of different directions to take, yet I didn't have the foggiest which path to go down. I didn't have enough free trialists to talk to and I struggled to understand how best to pitch the product. Inertia quickly set in.

I had a few private beta testers but I failed to get meaningful feedback from them. As a solopreneur I became way too consumed with building the feature set I wanted, which is what I assumed (rightly or wrongly) others would want too.

The original concept for Teamlight was to build a fun and simple-to-use company directory that synced with your Google Workplace or Microsoft 365 (or even Slack) account and allowed team members to add a rich profile so colleagues could get to know them better. Inexplicably these corporate products don't offer a way to do this, but it's a problem I've seen companies face time and again. I implemented this functionality pretty quickly (like, in a week) but then I decided to add Q&A functionality which was a relatively deep rabbit hole to go down.

I got there in the end but in hindsight I think this was a mistake. I should have launched the directory for free within a couple of weeks before even thinking about adding any other functionality. I should then have badgered companies to try it (what's to lose – it's free!), hound them for feedback and evolve the product around them.

Dang! A classic schoolboy error and a lesson learned.

I'm now backtracking to focus fully on getting more tyre-kickers and listening deeply to their ideas and feedback. I could really do with your help!

To start with I've made Teamlight FREE for 2024. All active companies and new signups will see their trials extended until January 2025. All the functionality is available, but you can opt to only use the directory feature and start simple. Or go the whole hog if you prefer. Up to you.

Signing up is a breeze – just connect your Google Workspace (you need to be an admin) and your directory is up and running in less than a minute. That's it.

I'd love you to try it and get your feedback. If you'd like to try it but can't because you're not using Google Workspace, please drop me a line and let me know (are you using Microsoft 365, Slack... or something else?). If you have connections at companies who you think might like it, do let them know!

If you have any thoughts or questions at all, please send me an email - I'd love to know what you think, what your first impressions are, and where you think it should go next.
