One of the reasons I take photographs is because people might look back at them in decades to come and wonder at how much things have changed.
This photo of the corner of Princes Street and Lothian Road in Edinburgh, by Glen Fairweather in 1973 is a wonderful example. It’s instantly recognisable but clearly from a time long ago. It looks calm and surprisingly clean, the round-edged cars look fabulous, but times weren’t so easy back then. Appearances can be deceptive.
It makes me wonder what people will think about images of Edinburgh today in 2077? I hope we look back fondly, but looking around at the trash, graffiti and the endless advertising of peak capitalism, I have an inkling that we might not.
